What’s going on?
From July 11th 2022, all Apprentice Cards provided will be offered to apprentices free of charge.
A new process has also been introduced to make things simpler for those experiencing difficulties with the application process. Now, apprentices who haven’t even completed their apprenticeship scheme enrolment process can apply for a Provisional Card before moving onto the Apprenticeship Card.
Alan O’Neile, Head of Communications at CSCS said:
“The Provisional card is valid for six months, cannot be renewed and requires the completion of the CITB Health, safety, and environment test, which can be transferred across to the Apprentice card. When enrolled onto the apprenticeship, the Apprentice will move off the Provisional card and onto the Apprentice card free of charge.”
Why?
CSCS received feedback from the industry about their range of cards, and which ones they were opting for.
Many employers told the company that they didn’t apply for their Apprentice Card because the apprenticeship registration application progress was too lengthy and difficult. Some employers told the company that they were not even aware of the Apprentice Card in the first place. This meant that tradespeople who wanted to get CSCS cards were often applying for the wrong ones.
“The Provisional card option also gives employers and new entrants a six-month window to decide if the apprenticeship is right for them.”
– Alan O’Neile, Head of Communications at CSCS
How to get involved
CSCS Apprentice cards are available to people who are enrolled on a recognised apprenticeship scheme. Once you get your card, it will be valid for four years and six months and cannot be renewed. Once you complete your apprenticeship and the card expires, you can apply for a Skilled Worker card.
To apply for the Apprentice card, you will need to submit evidence of your apprenticeship course and evidence that you have passed a CITB Health, Safety and Environment test or completed a CSCS-recognised health and safety course.
