Meet the team
A new feature film about the UK’s most famous tradesperson is reportedly in the works. We’re talking, of course, about the beloved children’s character Bob the Builder, who has been gracing our screens since 1999.
The film will be written by award-winning Colombian-American writer and director Felipe Vargas and will be overseen by Mattel and Nuyorican Productions. Through Nuyorican Productions, Jenny from the block will be co-producing. One of her co-producers, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas said:
“Jennifer, Benny, and I are elated to be partnering with the visionaries at Mattel Films along with Anthony Ramos, Felipe Vargas and ShadowMachine to bring Bob the Builder back to the screen. The show’s ability to promote positive thinking, problem solving and empowerment with a completely original story set in Puerto Rico puts a new spin on a beloved brand, and we can’t wait for new and existing fans to connect with these amazing characters.”
Introducing Bob the Builder
The titular character will be played by Hamilton star Anthony Ramos, who has Golden Globe and Emmy nominations under his toolbelt as well as a Grammy win.
Anthony Ramos will be producing the film alongside two members of ShadowMachine: the Academy Award-winning animation and production studio behind Pinocchio and BoJack Horseman. Anthony said:
“For years, Bob the Builder’s characters have inspired young people around the world. I’m proud to partner with Mattel Films, ShadowMachine, Nuyorican Productions, and Felipe Vargas to bring this important message to the big screen, adding elements of life that are inspired by my own. A movie about friends working together, a celebration of a beautiful home they share, and how love can help to conquer any obstacle in your way. Can we fix it? Yes, we can!”
The plot
Described by Mattel as “an inventive international story for today’s audiences”, the film will follow Roberto (Bob the Builder) as he travels to Puerto Rico for a major construction project. While there, he challenges the issues that are impacting the island and will dig “deeper into what it means to build”. Overall, the film promises to celebrate “the vibrant and colourful textures of the Caribbean Latin nations and their people.”
Where’s Wendy?
Unfortunately, Bob’s trusted sidekick Wendy wasn’t mentioned in the press release, but we hope she can take more of a starring role to inspire a new generation of young women into the industry.
